Lipoma

Soft elastic yellow color swelling in cheek/tongue

Histology:

  • Aggregates of adipocytes enclosed in fibrous tissue
  • Pale staining hexagonal cells, nuclei pushed to one side

Fat cells histologically similar to normal fat cells but metabolically different as fat not lost from lipoma on starvation

Clinical:

  • Slow growing
  • Mobile
  • Painless
  • Yellow
  • Sessile/pedunculated
  • Single/multiple lesions over subcutaneous tissue of limbs and trunk

Site:

  • Buccal sulcus
  • Floor of mouth
  • Lips
  • Cheek
  • Tongue

Diagnosis:

  • Biopsy
  • MRI
  • CT
  • Ultrasound

Management:

  • Surgical removal
  • Liposuction
