Peripheral fibroma

Reactive hyperplastic mass – occurs on gingiva

Origin: CT

Epidemiology: Young adults, F>M

Clinical: Pedunculated/sessile mass, color of surrounding tissues

Histology:

  • Peripheral ossifying fibroma:
    • Islands of immature bone and osteoid
    • Plump, benign fibroblasts
  • Peripheral odontogenic fibroma:
    • Well vascularized, non-encapsulated fibrous CT
    • Strands of odontogenic epithelium

Management:

  • Surgical removal of lesion down to the bone
  • Adjacent teeth are cleaned thoroughly to remove any source of irritation
  • Can recur
